Problem

How can we design for harsh and unknown environments?

Solution

We designed a structure that satisfies all the requirements of a functional greenhouse while also fulfilling the needs of a habitable and durable living space on Mars.

Abstract

With the consistent degredation of our existing natural environment, there comes a rising demand for designs that speak to minimizing material and energy consumption, while maintaining a high quality of life.

Space, due to the nature of its environment, provides an opportunity for us to critically evaluate living outside the scope of abundant resource availability.

Our proposed design derives not only from approaching habitat design for Mars or other planetary bodies, but from a desire to place a new perspective on sustainable living here on Earth.

We submitted our poster to the International Conference on Environmental Systems in July 2019.

Awards & Recognition

IMG_7520.JPG

We submitted our design to the 2019 NASA Big Ideas Competiton where it recieved special recognition and a recommendation for our team to attend and present at the International Conference on Environmental Systems.

We also won the 2019 Carnegie Mellon University School of Art Interdisciplinary award for our work.
